could couldn't konu anlatımı
Şu anda yapabildiğimiz işlerden ya da şu anki yeteneklerimizden bahsederken “can” yardımcı fiilini kullanırız. “could” ise “can” yardımcı fiilinin geçmiş halidir. Yani geçmişte yapabildiğimiz şeylerden bahsederken “could” kullanırız.
I can run very fast.
(Ben çok hızlı koşabilirim.)
I could run very fast when I was young.
(Ben gençken çok hızlı koşabilirdim.)
Olumlu cümlelerde “could” aşağıdaki gibi kullanılır.
Subject + could + Verb1
I could walk when I was one year old.
(Ben bir yaşındayken yürüyebilirdim.)
My grandfather could speak five languages.
(Büyükbabam beş dil konuşabilirdi.)
Olumsuz cümlelerde aşağıdaki gibi kullanılır.
“can” fiilinin olumsuzu “can’t” ya da “cannot” olarak kullanılır. Geçmiş zamanda bunun yerine “couldn’t” ya da “could not” kullanırız. Yani kısaca, geçmişte yapamadığımız işlerden ya da geçmişteki yetersizliklerimizden bahsetmek için “couldn’t” kullanırız.

(Ben dört yaşıma kadar konuşamazdım.)
She couldn’t ride a bike when she was a child.
(O, çocukken bisiklete binemezdi.)

(Türkiye’de kadınlar medeni kanunun kabulunden önce modern kıyafetler giyemezdi.)
Soru cümlelerinde “could” özneden önce gelir.
